Seven score and five years ago, “Honest” Abe Lincoln was added to an already full bill to dedicate a new Union cemetery at the site of a major battle — Gettysburg, Pa. A rumor says he scribbled it on the back of an envelope. He didn’t. But it was wickedly short — judging from the amount of time it took me to recite it in 5th grade for a U.S. history class, it couldn’t have lasted more than like 27 seconds (with restarts!). Some, like the totally awesome Shelbe Foote, have pointed out a couple of logical fallacies in the speech (a war stopping a rebellion to preserve a democracy … ok!), but it sure is 271 pretty words!
